When Microsoft Word is configured to generate previews for .DOC and .DOCX files, it may not be terminated when MediaBeacon Preview requests the process to stop. Multiple instances of Microsoft Word may remain open on the Preview server, consuming resources.
This issue can be identified within the Task Manager on the Preview Server. Under “Processes”, these will be any processes that are named “Microsoft Word (32 bit)” and showing 0% CPU usage.
These unclosed instances may be manually terminated within the Task Manager by highlighting the process and clicking the “End Task” button in the lower right.
If many instances are open, it is much better to use the "taskkill" function within Windows PowerShell to terminate all of the running processes using the below steps:
Search for the Windows PowerShell application by searching applications from the Start Menu.
Right-Click the Windows PowerShell application and select “Run as an Administrator."
When prompted with a User Account Control window, select “Yes.”
Within the Command Prompt type the following command:
taskkill /f /im winword.exe
Verify all MS Word tasks terminated in Task Manager.
