How to Create and Edit a Schema

Schemas and fields are important to any organization's taxonomy. Whether setting up MediaBeacon for the first time or performing a change to taxonomy, it will be important to understand these concepts.

Creating a Schema

Schemas are a group of fields that are related to each other. For example, Dublin Core has its own schema within MediaBeacon. To create a schema, follow the steps below:

  1. Under the 'Manage' menu at the top of the window, select System - you will be presented with the System Administration console
  2. Select the 'Fields' tab from the grey tabs towards the top of the screen
  3. To create a new schema, you will need to decide on a URI (Universal Resource Indicator)
    • This should be formatted as such: http://ns.example.com/schemaname/1.0/
      • Note: The trailing slash is required
    • Typically the 'example' will be replaced with the name of your company or the company you are performing the work for
    • The '1.0' at the end is the version of the schema
    • One a URI has been determined, type that into the 'Add schema:' field in the center of the screen and click 'Add'
    • You should see a new empty table with the newly entered URI appear in the window

Adding/Editing Fields

Fields will be where metadata is entered and displayed for assets.

  1. Along the bottom of the table will be an 'Add field:' box. Type the name or abbreviation for each field in this space. Note that spaces are not allowed when typing here.
    1. Single field - the name or abbreviation without spaces
    2. Multiple fields - the names or abbreviations without spaces, separated by commas (e.g. "Field1,Field2,Field3")
    3. Click 'Add' on the right-hand side of the box to enter the add the new fields to the schema
    4. The window should refresh to show you the new fields as lines in the table - each field is now editable and can be configured as desired.
    5. Once editing of each field is complete, click the 'Update' button in the bottom right-hand corner to save changes
    6. One important step to make the fields more user-friendly is to clean up the name mappings. This can be done by navigating to the 'Name Mappings' tab in the grey tabs along the top of the window.
      1. Once there, make sure to change the dropdown next to 'Name Maps for Group' to Default (unless you want only one ACL to see the changes you are making. This is NOT recommended.)
      2. Find your schema and click the circle with a pen icon to edit
      3. Change the Title of the schema to something that describes the schema and add spaces and syntax to the fields
      4. Click the 'Update' button in the bottom right-hand corner to save changes

Deleting a Schema

To delete a schema, click the 'Delete' button in the bottom right-hand corner of the schema table.

CAUTION: this can NOT be reversed!
